Gravity wells

1  What is a gravity well in simple terms?
1.1
A gravity well is an imagined model of the gravity field around something in space – the more massive the body, the deeper and more extensive the gravity well.
Changed from here.   What does massive mean?

1.2
When used to model a solar system, you have a very large mass, the Sun, at the centre, making a large deep well. The planets, smaller masses, given the right amount of speed, will ride around in the Sun’s well in a circle.
From here but there's a lot of complicated text.

1.3
First, let us simply define what a gravity well is.
  1. A gravity well is a term used.. to describe the gravity pull that a large body exerts in space.

  2. The more mass that the body has, the deeper the gravity well.

  3. For our solar system, this means the Sun has the deepest gravity well, ..

  4. The picture shows the Earth going around the Sun

2  Let's Google it and then choose.

  1. A "gravity well" is like an imagined pit in space where a big object, like a planet or star, pulls things towards it with its gravity,

  2. kind of like a big invisible magnet;

  3. the bigger the object, the deeper the "well" and the stronger the pull, so smaller things like moons or spaceships would orbit around it, staying in the "well" because of the gravity.

3   Key points:

  1. 1   Think of a big ball:
Imagine a big, heavy ball on a trampoline - the fabric dips down around the ball, that's like a gravity well.

  2. 2   Bigger pull, deeper well:
The bigger the object in space, the deeper the gravity well, meaning it pulls things closer with more force.

  3. 3   Orbiting
When something is orbiting a planet, it's like it's spinning around the edge of the gravity well, not falling straight in.
